Warung, Rumah Makan & Restoran

I’m back! Today I’m gonna tell you the difference between warung, rumah makan and restoran! Have you ever heard about that?

 Warung, Rumah Makan and Restoran?

WARUNG

Okay. Let’s start from Warung. We can find warung everywhere everyplace in Indonesia. We got two types of warung. First, Warung (biasa) – warung that serve you kind of domestic snack, cigarette, and mie instant. We often call it as warung or kios.

 Second, Warung (makan). This one is completely different. Warung makan, or often we call it WARTEG (Warung Tegal) served you many kind of heavy meal that crazily cheap! You got nasi (rice), lauk-pauk ( side dish, whether it meat, fish, or vegetable soup), and es teh/ teh hangat (cold/hot tea).  You gotta full with usually costs the equivalent of 1-2 Euros or less than Rp 10.000,- . That’s why university student or poor Indonesian love warteg!

RUMAH MAKAN

Rumah Makan. Well, this one is kind of the cheaper restaurant. What make Rumah Makan is different to Warung/Warteg is rumah makan will give you chairs rather than wooden benches to sit. Rumah makan is bigger than warteg but smaller than restaurants. The famous rumah makan all over Indonesia is Rumah Makan Padang. Well yes! Rumah Makan Padang, usually owned by orang Padang (origin from Padang). We call it Uda – if the one who serve you is a male, or Uni – if the one who serve you is a female. You can choose many kind of Padang food, such as – rendang, ….. . The cost usually from Rp.10.000,- until Rp. 35.000 / one portion.

But, hey! Actually, Rumah makan it’s not only Rumah Makan Padang. You can also find another kind of rumah Makan such as Rumah Makan Sunda, Rumah Makan Aceh, etc. The abbreviation of Rumah Makan is R.M . So if you found the building with the abbreviation of R.M – such as R.M Sunda, you coulda coming and eat there :)

RESTORAN

Okay. Restoran is kind of The Dutch loanword, restaurants. Well, restoran serve you twice or even three times better than Rumah Makan. For Indonesian case, when they heard the word of Restoran, their brain already calculate how much money they’ll spent there. Lol. For poor Indonesian. But seriously, restoran is twice, three, or even ten times expensive than rumah makan!

Indonesian got many kind of Restoran. Usually, we divide it by type. There are japanese restourant / Resotran jepang, chinese restourant, korean restourant, italian restourant, Indonesian restourant, etc.

I think that’s all. You already got the different, aren’t you? Okay. The choice is yours. If you felt like you kinda broke or you want to save your money but still full, you can choose between warteg or rumah makan. But if you feelin’ like you want to have high class place to eat, come and get it in Restourant.
